Copper, when first installed is a bright, shiny red-orange which slowly fades to a blue-green patina. The aging process can also include a phase of black marks and streaks, which over time will turn to a complete blue-green patina. The patina comes when a copper roof is exposed to the elements and serves as a preservative. In addition to creating its own protective coating, copper contains antimicrobial properties which naturally resist mold and mildew.
how to remove debris from a copper roof
Because of these natural qualities, we recommend leaving copper as it is. Harsh scrubbing could potentially remove the patina, which can damage the copper. Regular rinsing down can remove any droppings and grime. If in the case there is some debris from overhanging trees you wish to remove, try removing it with a light, slightly acidic detergent and gentle scrubbing with a sponge. This should be more than sufficient in keeping your roof clean, while not disturbing the natural patina process.
