Copper standing seam roofing is a type of roofing system that uses copper panels with raised seams to cover and protect a building. This type of roofing is known for its durability, longevity, and distinctively neat appearance. Copper standing seam roofs have had a long history in America, beginning with the National Historic Landmark, Christ Church in Philadelphia, installed back in 1727! The panels are said to have been imported from England before the US began manufacturing their own rolled copper. Today, this roofing application is used often on numerous buildings from historic churches to residential homes. With copper roofs often lasting 100+ years and being virtually maintenance free, this is an excellent choice for building owners and homeowners alike. In addition to copper’s longevity, the appearance of the standing seam creates a simple, clean roofing profile which complements many architectural styles. 

The roofing system consists of long, continuous copper panels, which come in the form of a sheets or coil to be cut. They are installed vertically from the eaves to the ridge of the roof, with the seams raised above the level of the roof. The seam is achieved by two pieces of copper sheet coming together at a 90º degree angle, with one slightly taller than the other. The taller sheet is then folded over the other, then folded over once more, essentially locking the two pieces of copper together. This double lock installation process creates the distinctive standing seam profile.
