Gutters

Gutters are channels that are installed along the edges of a roof that collect and direct rainwater away from the building. Gutters have been around for centuries and can be traced to ancient civilizations. Ancient cities used gutter style systems to manage water runoff which were useful for preventing flooding and watershed in mountainous regions.

Early gutters were made from natural materials like wood, stone, or clay. Present day uses are much more commercialized and simplified to be used on a typical modern home. Metals such as copper and galvanized steel adorn some of the more expensive estates. Materials like aluminum and PVC are very resistant to rust and corrosion and are more common, as they are cost effective, and still have an effective durability.

Copper gutters are typically installed with seamless sections to reduce the risk of leaks. They are commonly soldered or riveted together for added strength.

Copper gutters can last 50 years or more, with proper maintenance, making them a long-term investment.

A riveted copper gutter is a type of gutter system crafted from copper, where individual sections are joined together using metal rivets. Unlike seamless gutters, which are made from a single continuous piece, riveted copper gutters are assembled in separate sections, with the seams fastened by rivets

Installed at the top of downspouts to prevent debris from clogging the system are gutter screens that help keep leaves, twigs, and other debris from entering the gutter system. This reduces the likelihood of clogs, which can lead to water overflow and potential damage to the roof and foundation.

Downspouts transport rainwater from the gutters to the ground or a drainage system, helping to control water runoff and protect the building’s foundation. These can be intricate or simple and may feature decorative elements to neatly direct runoff.  They can be designed to blend seamlessly with the building's architecture.

This custom project had a fish scale copper roofing  and was detailed with fish-like spitters to direct water away from the structure. Gutter Maintenance

For both gutters and downspouts to work efficiently, regular maintenance is essential:

• Gutters are recommended to be cleaned twice a year (spring and fall), or more often if you have multiple trees around. Unless you have screens installed, this will involve removing leaves, twigs, and other debris that can block water flow.

• Check for signs of leaks, sagging, or rust, and repair any damaged sections. Ensure that water is flowing easily through the downspouts and that they are directing water away from the foundation of the building.
